Why Is My Gel Polish Lifting? (7 Real Causes)

You got your nails done. They looked brilliant. And then, three days later, there’s a corner lifting on your ring finger and you’re quietly furious about it.

If this has happened to you more than once, here’s the thing: it’s almost never the polish itself. The formula isn’t faulty, and it’s not bad luck. Gel polish lifting has specific causes, and every single one of them is diagnosable if you know what you’re looking at. Once you figure out which one is happening on your nails, fixing it is actually pretty straightforward.

There are seven main reasons gel polish lifts or chips early. We’ll go through all of them — what causes each one, how to spot which one is happening on your nails, and what to do about it.

The 7 real reasons your gel polish isn’t lasting

Most people assume that when gel lifts, it’s a product quality problem. Almost always, it isn’t. It’s one of these seven things.

1. Your nail plate has too much natural oil on it

This is the most common cause of gel lifting, and it catches a lot of people out because it has nothing to do with what they did during application.

Some people naturally produce more oil on the surface of their nail plate than others. It’s genetic, it varies by person, and it’s also affected by things like diet, hormones, and how much hand cream you’ve been using. When there’s a film of oil on the nail, the base coat can’t get a proper grip — it’s trying to bond to oil rather than nail, and that bond is always going to fail.

If this is your problem, the gel lifts specifically at the cuticle area or the base of the nail within the first few days — not the tip. If you’re someone who regularly uses hand cream or cuticle oil (good habit, bad timing right before a gel application), this is almost certainly what’s going on.

Dehydration is the fix — and it’s a specific step, not just wiping your nails with whatever’s nearby. Before applying base coat, wipe each nail with a lint-free pad soaked in 100% acetone or 99% isopropyl alcohol. Let them dry completely. If you’re consistently oily, add a dedicated nail dehydrator on top of that — it’s a separate product that draws residual moisture and oil out of the surface before your base coat goes on.

One thing that matters here: don’t touch the nail after dehydrating. Not the pad, not your other fingers, nothing. The second skin makes contact, you’ve added oil back. Get your base coat on straight away.

2. Prep got skipped or rushed

Dehydration is one part of prep. The other part is physical — and it’s the one people are most likely to skip because it feels like unnecessary faff.

Your natural nail has a smooth, slightly shiny surface. That smoothness works against you with gel. The base coat needs something to grip onto at a microscopic level, and a perfectly smooth nail doesn’t give it much. Light buffing — with a 180-grit or 240-grit file — creates tiny abrasions in the surface that the base coat can key into.

You’re not trying to thin the nail down. Just remove the surface shine. Thirty seconds per nail, very light pressure. Wipe away the dust, dehydrate, and go.

The other prep steps that matter: pushing back the cuticle so the nail plate is as exposed as possible, and trimming or filing to shape before any product goes on. Doing those steps after causes vibration and movement that disturbs what you’ve already applied.

Gel that lifts across the whole nail surface — not just at one edge — is usually this. The base coat never fully bonded because there was nothing for it to hold onto.

3. Gel got onto the skin during application

This one is subtle and it causes a lot of confusion because the problem doesn’t always show up immediately.

When gel cures while it’s touching your skin, it bonds to the skin rather than to the nail. Skin sheds. Every few days your skin is turning over new cells and losing old ones, and when that happens at the cuticle edge, it takes the gel with it. The whole edge lifts, usually within the first week, and it looks like the gel failed to bond — but it bonded fine. It just bonded to the wrong thing.

The other issue with gel on skin is more serious: it increases the risk of developing a sensitisation to acrylates, the chemicals in gel that make it cure and harden. HEMA (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) is the one you’ll hear about most — it’s a common ingredient and a known allergen when it comes into repeated contact with skin. You might be fine for years and then suddenly develop a reaction, and once that happens it doesn’t go away. It gets worse with each exposure. So keeping gel off the skin isn’t just about a cleaner manicure — it’s genuinely worth taking seriously.

Flood the cuticle and then clean up, rather than trying to stay away from the skin entirely. Apply your base coat slightly past the cuticle line, then use a thin nail art brush or orange stick to push the excess off the skin before you cure. A lot of techs do this as muscle memory — beginners often don’t realise it’s happening. Once you cure gel onto skin, there’s no fixing it from the outside. You’d have to remove and redo. A few seconds of cleanup before the lamp saves all of that.

If lifting consistently happens right at the cuticle line but the rest of the nail is fine, this is almost certainly what’s going on.

4. The layers were too thick

This one comes from good intentions going wrong. You want full opacity, or you’re trying to build it up fast, so you put on a thick coat. The lamp cures the surface. But the inside of a thick layer doesn’t get enough light penetration to cure fully, and you end up with gel that looks set on the outside but is still partially liquid underneath.

That uncured layer causes problems. It can make the gel wrinkle or pull during cure (the surface contracts while the inside is still moveable). It can cause the gel to feel soft or slightly spongy once cooled. And it’s a lifting risk because the adhesion at the nail-to-base-coat level is being compromised by the unstable layer above it.

The wrinkling during cure is the clearest sign. If your gel is developing a texture like orange peel or rippling under the lamp, the layer is too thick. If it’s not obviously wrinkling but you’re getting consistent lifting or a slightly rubbery feel after cure, that’s the softer version of the same problem.

Thin coats — that’s it. Two or three thin coats will always beat one thick one, for coverage, for durability, and for cure quality. If the colour isn’t opaque enough after two, do a third. Keep each one thin.

If you’ve already cured a wrinkling gel, you have two options. If it’s just slight texture, you can file it smooth, wipe clean, and apply another thin coat over the top. But the underlying cure is compromised, and it’s not going to last as well. The better answer, when it happens, is to take it off and start again. Nobody wants to hear that, but it’s true.

5. The lamp isn’t compatible with your gel, or it’s getting old

Most people don’t think much about the lamp. You put your hand under it, it flashes, job done. But the lamp is doing most of the actual work, and if it’s wrong for your product or worn out, everything else you’ve done right won’t save you.

Gel nail polish formulas cure at specific wavelengths of light. The photoinitiators in the gel — the chemicals that trigger the curing reaction — are designed to respond to particular nanometre ranges. Different brands sometimes use different photoinitiator packages, which is why brand compatibility matters. A lamp calibrated for one formula might not effectively cure a different brand’s gel, even if it looks like it’s working.

The most common version of this problem: buying a cheaper or unbranded lamp and using it with a professional gel system. A £12 lamp from a marketplace isn’t going to give you the same cure as the 48W LED lamp the brand designed their formula around. The gel might look set. It might not wrinkle. But it’s not fully polymerised, and it’ll lift.

The other version: your lamp is old. LED lamps degrade over time. The diodes lose intensity, and a lamp that was curing well 18 months ago might now be underpowering your gel without any obvious sign that anything’s wrong. If you’ve been using the same lamp for over a year and you’re suddenly getting more lifting than you used to, the lamp is a real possibility.

Signs that it’s a lamp issue: consistent lifting across multiple nails despite good prep, gel that stays slightly tacky or soft after curing, or wrinkling that only started happening after switching to a new gel brand.

The fix is to use the lamp the brand recommends, or at minimum a lamp with a compatible wattage and wavelength for the formula. Check your gel brand’s instructions — most will specify. If your lamp is old, replacing it is genuinely worth it. It’s the piece of equipment that makes everything else work.

6. You’re mixing products from different brands

This is the one that gets people who think they’re being smart about it — using a base coat from one brand because it’s better for their nail type, a colour from another because of the shade selection, and a no-wipe top coat from a third because of the finish. Makes sense in theory. Often doesn’t work in practice.

Gel systems are designed end-to-end. The base coat chemistry is formulated to bond with the brand’s colour gels. The colour is formulated to bond with the brand’s top coat. The whole system cures at the same rates under the same conditions. When you mix brands, you’re introducing variables the manufacturers didn’t test for — different cure rates, different layer thicknesses, different shrinkage behaviours. Any of those mismatches can cause delamination between the layers.

The sign that product mixing is your issue: lifting or peeling that happens between layers rather than at the nail surface. The top coat peeling away from the colour, or the colour separating from the base coat, while the base coat is still firmly on the nail. That’s a layer-to-layer adhesion failure, not a nail-to-base failure.

No-wipe top coats are a particularly common mixing problem. Some gel systems require a specific wipe-off step (removing the tacky inhibition layer before applying the next coat), and if you replace the system’s top coat with a no-wipe version that leaves a different surface chemistry, the layer above it may not bond correctly.

The fix: use one brand’s system from base coat to top coat, at least until you’ve got consistent results. If you want to introduce one element from another brand — a specific colour, for example — research whether it’s been tested with your system before committing to it.

7. Lifestyle is doing more damage than you realise

Even a perfect application won’t survive everything. If you’re regularly exposing your gel manicure to the things that break it down, lifting is going to happen regardless of technique.

Washing up without gloves is the big one. Hot soapy water is harsh on gel — the heat causes the nail plate to expand and contract slightly, the water works under any micro-gaps at the edges, and detergent strips at the surface over time. Do the dishes daily without gloves and a three-week manicure becomes a ten-day one.

Swimming does similar damage, faster. Chlorinated pools are particularly aggressive. If you swim regularly, shorter wear time between appointments is just the reality.

Cleaning products — anything with bleach, strong acids, or acetone — can degrade the gel surface over time. Most people know about acetone from nail polish remover, but general household cleaners cause cumulative damage too.

And using your nails as tools: opening ring pulls, scraping labels, prying things. Every time you use the tip of your nail as a lever, you’re putting stress on the free edge that gel wasn’t built to handle.

The signs that lifestyle is your problem: lifting or chipping that starts at the free edge rather than the cuticle, and that starts happening around day 7–10 rather than immediately. The gel bonded fine initially — it’s been worn down.

Gloves for washing up, honestly. It’s the most boring piece of advice and it’s the most effective one. Cuticle oil every day too — keeping the skin around the nail flexible and hydrated reduces the mechanical stress on the gel at the cuticle edge as you move your hands.

How to stop gel lifting at the free edge

The free edge — the very tip of your nail — is the most exposed part of the manicure. It takes the knocks. It hits keyboards, surfaces, bags. If you don’t seal it properly during application, it’s going to lift there first.

Sealing the free edge is called capping, and it’s something experienced techs do automatically but beginners often don’t know they’re supposed to do at all. The idea is simple: you run the brush along the tip of the nail with each coat, so the gel wraps around the edge and seals it shut. No gap for water or impact to get under.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Apply your base coat as normal, up to but not touching the skin. Before you cure, flip the brush flat so it’s edge-on to the nail tip and pull it lightly across the very end of the nail — just enough product to coat the edge.
  2. Cure your base coat.
  3. Apply your first colour coat and do the same thing at the tip before curing. You don’t need a lot of product — just enough to close the edge.
  4. Repeat with your second colour coat.
  5. Apply your top coat, cap the edge again, then cure.

Check after each cure. Hold your nail under a light at an angle and look at the tip. If you can see a gap or a dry edge where the gel hasn’t wrapped around, add a thin swipe of the same product and cure again before moving on.

It adds maybe 30 seconds to the whole manicure. It’s one of those technique details that makes a disproportionate difference to how long the manicure holds up.

Why does gel polish peel off in one sheet?

When gel lifts cleanly as one piece — top coat, colour, and base coat all coming off together — it’s almost always a prep failure. Specifically, the nail surface wasn’t dehydrated or lightly buffed before the base coat went on, so the base coat never formed a real bond with the nail plate. It bonded to itself (the layers stuck to each other just fine), but the whole system was sitting on a surface it couldn’t grip.

People with naturally oily nail plates are more likely to experience this. If it’s happening consistently, add a proper nail dehydrator to your prep routine and make sure you’re buffing the surface before any product goes on. The gel peeling off cleanly in one piece is actually useful information — it means the layers are fine, the prep is the problem.

Why is my gel wrinkling when I cure it?

Gel that wrinkles, ripples, or develops an orange-peel texture under the lamp has almost always been applied too thick. The surface of the layer cures and contracts while the inside is still liquid and moveable, which causes the surface to crinkle up.

The other possibility: your lamp isn’t powerful enough for the formula. If you’re applying thin coats and still getting wrinkling, the lamp can’t drive enough energy through the product to cure it before the surface tension causes problems.

Start with thinner coats. If the wrinkling continues with genuinely thin layers, look at your lamp.

How to check your gel is curing properly

After curing, gel should feel completely hard and non-flexible. Press lightly with a fingernail — it should leave no dent, no give, nothing. If it dents, or if it feels at all spongy or rubbery, it’s not fully cured.

The exception: some gel formulas are designed to leave a tacky inhibition layer on the surface after curing. This is a deliberate surface chemistry thing — the tackiness allows the next layer to bond to it. It’s not uncured gel. Your brand’s instructions will tell you whether to wipe this layer off before the next coat or leave it. What’s not normal is tackiness that persists after the top coat has cured.

If your gel is consistently feeling soft after curing, check: cure time (are you going the full duration?), lamp wattage (is it appropriate for the formula?), and layer thickness (is there a chance the layers are too thick for the light to penetrate?). Usually it’s one of those three.

Does gel lift more at home than in a salon?

Generally, yes — especially in the early stages of doing your own nails. Not because home products are worse, but because prep technique, equipment, and experience all take time to get right. Professional nail techs have done this hundreds of times. They know exactly what dehydrated nail looks like, they can feel when a layer is right, and their equipment is calibrated for the products they use.

Most home gel problems are prep and lamp issues, both of which are genuinely solvable. As technique improves, home results usually get much closer to salon quality. If you’re getting consistent lifting at home despite following all the steps, the most likely culprits are lamp compatibility and dehydration — those are the two where home setups most often fall short.

Gel lifting vs BIAB lifting — different problems

If you’ve switched from standard gel polish to BIAB, or you’re thinking about it, it’s worth knowing that BIAB lifting has the same prep-related causes as gel polish, but adds one more: the shape.

BIAB is a structural product, and part of what makes it strong is the apex — a slight curve built into the gel from cuticle to tip that mirrors the natural shape of a healthy nail. If the apex isn’t built correctly, the BIAB sits flat rather than curved, and it’s under more stress at the tip and sides. That stress causes lifting even when prep is perfect.

If BIAB is lifting despite solid prep, the shape is worth looking at. A retrain in the application technique usually fixes it. The difference between BIAB and gel polish is worth understanding before making the switch — they’re doing different jobs, and what works for one doesn’t always apply to the other.

One more thing: don’t peel it off

If gel has been lifting and you’ve been picking at it — the white, thin, chalky patches that appear on the nail afterwards are your actual nail plate. Peeling gel takes layers of nail with it. That damage grows out slowly, as in months, and in the meantime the nail is weaker and more likely to keep having problems.

If your gel is lifting at the edges but you’re not ready to do a full removal, at least leave it alone rather than picking. Filing down a lifted edge and leaving the rest is fine if nothing’s getting underneath. The moment there’s a gap where moisture or debris can sit, take it off properly — lifted gel with something underneath is a good way to end up with a nail infection.
