Gel polish is defined by one key difference from traditional nail polish. It does not air dry. It cures. That single distinction is what makes a lamp essential, not optional.
If we are using gel polish properly, we are working with a system that relies on light to harden and set. Without that process, the product remains unstable on the nail. It may look dry, but it is not chemically cured.
Gel polish contains photoinitiators. These are ingredients that react when exposed to specific wavelengths of light. When that reaction happens, the liquid formula transforms into a solid, durable coating.
Without a lamp:
This last point matters. Uncured gel is one of the main causes of sensitivity and allergic reactions. Proper curing is not just about performance. It is about safety.

There is a common misconception that gel polish can “dry eventually” without a lamp. It cannot.

In practice, LED is now the preferred choice for most users. It is faster, more efficient and designed to work with modern gel formulations.
However, compatibility matters.
